Countdown to Taunton Flower Show, 7-8th August

Now approaching its 195th year, the Taunton Flower Show remains the oldest flower show in the UK, but what awaits visitors is far more than tradition alone.

At its heart is the Floral Marquee, where visitors can get expert knowledge and plenty of inspiration. The Bellman Memorial Stage hosts a programme of talks and demonstrations, including the ever-popular Gardeners’ Question Time. This year welcomes back Chris Hull, award-winning designer and BBC Garden Rescue presenter, fresh from success at RHS Chelsea. His return promises practical insight into transforming everyday outdoor spaces.

Beyond the marquee, the competition tent showcases the skill and dedication of local growers, bakers and makers, while the Designer Gardens bring a touch of Chelsea-style ambition to Somerset with creative spaces built specially for the show. The Ready Steady Garden competition adds a fast-paced creative challenge, with teams racing against the clock to build a striking planter.

The arena delivers fun and spectacle throughout both days. From Jonathan Marshall’s elegant horseback falconry to Meirion Owen’s skilful sheepdog displays and the high-adrenaline stunts of Dangerous Steve, the programme balances heritage with high energy. The Barnstaple Town Youth Marching Band also brings a lively musical presence to add to the overall atmosphere.

Elsewhere, the show embraces a festival feel, with two live music stages feature local talent, while the Artisan Village and Fountain areas offer space to relax, eat and explore.

For families, the Children’s Village is a highlight with free activities, crafts, games and performances from Magical Alex to ensure younger visitors are fully part of the experience.

Rounding it off, the Wine and Cider Tent and Bees and Honey marquee celebrate Somerset’s rich produce and traditions.

It’s this blend of heritage and community that continues to define the Taunton Flower Show as a cornerstone of our town. This much-loved event brings people together, supports local talent and business and with continued backing will keep thriving for generations to come.
