Castle Cary town is turning yellow for this year’s South West in Bloom competition.

Last year Castle Cary was awarded three gold medals and is once again taking part in the countrywide RHS event.

Having scooped the best small town and best portfolio medal for the south west, as well as the town’s primary school and the Eat Cary garden  both winning awards, Castle Cary is gearing up for this year’s contest – with a very yellow theme.

“It is wonderful to see our town turning yellow,” said a Penny Steiner. “Sunflowers are starting to appear everywhere, in all shapes and forms, and the hanging baskets are beginning to bloom.”

Meanwhile, a series of events will celebrate all things creative and horticultural this summer, including:

  • Cary’s Summer Art Exhibition: The Market House, from June 30 until July 9 between 10am and 4pm, featuring more than 100 entries showcasing an “amazing array of art from local individuals and groups” such as paintings, ceramics, glass, textiles and more. Exhibits are in The Shambles, The Assembly Room and Billard Room.
  • The Sunflower Trail: From July 1 to 31, featuring more than 100 entries, all around town. Trail maps are available from The Market House and Bailey Hill Bookshop and cost £1.
  • Community Garden Pots: From July 1 to 31, around 25 pots planted by town organisations will be on display at The Creamery Garden at Castle Cary railway station.
  • The Living Wall: Set to be in full bloom from July 1 with a summer makeover, the wall is on the bus shelter by The Horsepond.
  • Judging day: July 8 is Castle Cary’s nominated day for RHS judges to visit, taking a tour to evaluate the town’s efforts.
  • Sow Grow Bloom Festival: On July 11, the festival is the finale to Cary in Bloom 2026 for the whole community, featuring bands, entertainment, games, fundraising activities, food, drink and more. The event runs from noon until 7pm on The Donald Pither Field, raising money for The Pavilion rebuilding project.
