Residents and visitors are invited to step back through eight decades of culture and creativity Bridgwater Arts Centre launches a special exhibition celebrating its 80th anniversary.
Running until 24 October, the exhibition explores the rich history of one of Bridgwater’s most treasured cultural venues. Through memorabilia, photographs and archive material, visitors can discover the story of Bridgwater Arts Centre from its founding in 1946 to its evolution as the oldest continuously funded arts centre in England, celebrating eight decades of creativity.
Visitors will be able to explore historic programmes featuring past performances and events, discover stories captured in local newspaper archives, view photographs from across the decades and uncover the many memories that have shaped the Arts Centre over the last 80 years.
The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the generations of performers, artists, volunteers and audiences who have played a part in making Bridgwater Arts Centre a cornerstone of the town’s cultural life.
Cllr Irena Hubble Chair of the Arts Centre Committee said, “Bridgwater Arts Centre has been at the heart of the town’s cultural scene for 80 years, providing a space where creativity can flourish and communities can come together. This exhibition celebrates not only the history of the building, but also the people, performances and memories that have made it such a special place over the decades.
“Whether you are a long-time supporter or visiting for the first time, we encourage everyone to come along and discover the story of Bridgwater Arts Centre.”
The exhibition offers visitors a nostalgic journey through the Centre’s past while celebrating its continuing role in the town today.
Marking the beginning of a year-long programme of 80th anniversary celebrations, the exhibition is one of a number of special events and projects planned over the coming months. Bridgwater Arts Centre will host heritage tours, community arts activities, a new film capturing local memories, exhibitions, performances and fundraising initiatives, all designed to celebrate the Centre’s remarkable history while helping secure its future for generations to come.
The anniversary programme will culminate in autumn 2027, bringing together artists, audiences, volunteers and supporters to celebrate eight decades at the heart of Bridgwater’s cultural life.
